What to do when someone dies?
Someone dies? Death is an event that cannot be prevented. No one knows exactly when someone’s death will occur, therefore it is important to get informed about certain facts and be prepared for the situation. Depending on the location of death, below summarises how you should act to respond:
1, When someone died at home: first call should be made to the family doctor, or contact the police if circumstances requires. When the doctor has issued a death certificate based on medical evidence, the family member will contact a funeral director to move the deceased’s remain to a mortuary. If the doctor declines to issue a death certificate, the family must contact the police to arrange a transfer to the coroner, who will then investigate the cause of death. The family should then contact a funeral director to prepare the funeral once the investigation is completed.
2, When someone died in a hospital: the hospital usually would have notified the family when they saw the person is dying. A medical death certificate is normally issued by the attending doctor once the death has occurred. If cremation is planned, the doctor will also issue a cremation permit. The family then must contact the funeral home to transfer the remain of the deceased to a mortuary.
3, When someone died in a nursing home or private hospital: as there is no facility to keep the deceased’s remain in these institutions, the nursing staff will normally notify the family if someone’s death is imminent. The staff will contact a doctor to issue the death certificate, and notify the funeral home nominated by the family so that the remain will be transferred to the mortuary in the shortest time.
4, When someone has died oversea: if the deceased is in another country, the remain is usually cremated in that country where death occurred. The cremated remain will then be transported to the home country. A memorial ceremony may ensue thereafter.
